Product Description

Ampicillin, an antibiotic that can be given for prevention and treatment of bacterial infections, like meningitis, salmonellosis, endocarditis, respiratory tract infections (RTI) and urinary tract infections (UTI). It can also be given for the prevention of group B streptococcal infection in newborns. It can be taken orally or can be injected into a muscle, or intravenously. It must not be indicated for the treatment of viral infections.

Rash, nausea, and diarrhea are some common side effects, while Clostridium difficile colitis or anaphylaxis is a serious side effect of Ampicillin. People who are allergic to penicillin must not be prescribed this medicine. The dose must be decreased when prescribed to people with kidney problems. The 1961 developed Ampicillin is on the list of List of Essential Medicines by World Health Organization.

Medical uses :

It protects against Gram-positive bacteria (Streptococcus pneumoniae, some isolates of Staphylococcus aureus (but not penicillin-resistant or methicillin-resistant strains), Streptococcus pyogenes, and some Enterococcus) and Gram-negative bacteria (some Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria meningitidis, and some of the Enterobacteriaceae). When given with sulbactam, its activity is enhanced. Sulbactam is a drug that inhibits beta lactamase.
